Lake Country

Welcome to Lake Country

With a name like this, it’s easy to imagine the beauty that surrounds this place. Nestled in between Kelowna and Vernon, Lake Country is home to three lakes – Okanagan Lake, Kalamalka Lake, and Wood Lake. As a true Okanagan town, there is always something fun to do for every member of the family.

With a modest population of almost 17,000 people, Lake Country is made up of 4 distinct communities: Okanagan Center, Oyama, Winfield, and Carr’s Landing. The Kelowna International Airport is within a 10-minute drive, making it an accessible vacation destination. By vehicle, it is 4 hours east of Vancouver and 7 hours west of Calgary.

Outdoor activities are in abundance here – hiking, biking, fishing, and boating are the most common of them. Mild winters and hot summers make it the ideal location to enjoy with family and friends. With a variety of places to stay, things to do, and delicious food & drink options, Lake Country is a must-visit when in the Okanagan.

We’ve outlined the best of Lake Country below to ensure you can have the best visit possible. Fair warning – once you experience it, you may never want to leave!

Things to Do

Three world-class lakes within a 10-minute drive, endless hiking trails, restaurants, family fun, and more. Lake Country offers a wide selection of activities that cater to all interests. No matter the time of year, there’s always something fun to explore.

Outdoor Activities

Easy lake access, seemingly unlimited hiking trails, and endless views are key reasons why Lake Country is meant for outdoor play. The most common hike is Spion Kop – a moderate climb that leads you to an incredible southern-facing view of the valley. Rent a bike and pedal the famous Okanagan Rail Trail that stretches from Kelowna to Vernon, or get the adrenaline going at the Oyama Zipline & Adventure Park. No matter what time of year, you’ll always have something fun to do here!

Wine

The Lake Country Scenic Sip Trail is a must-do. With unparalleled views, authentic stories, and 8 world-class wineries along the way, you’ll get a full understanding and appreciation of BC’s wine culture. Within many of these wineries are world-class restaurants, each offering unique dishes that pair perfectly with the wine they proudly produce.

Beaches

Three lakes nearby means you have a variety of options when it comes to beaches. Pebble Beach, as the name suggests, is a quiet and rocky beach that sits on the shores of Okanagan Lake. Beasley Park is an ideal beach for the whole family – a well-maintained, sandy beach, a playground for the kids, and located on the shores of the beautiful Wood Lake. Lake Country’s beaches are perfect for those looking to avoid the craziness of the popular Kelowna and Vernon beaches.

Family Fun

Lake Country has an assortment of family and kid-friendly activities to choose from. Head to the Kangaroo Creek Farm to interact with and learn about various exotic animals. On those hot summer days, take the kiddos to Threthway Splash Park where they can burn off some energy, or when the weather isn’t so good, explore the Lake Country Museum and learn about the history of this beautiful area.

Water Sports

Perhaps the main reason for visiting Lake Country is to enjoy various activities on the three lakes. Beach House Boat Rentals, Lake Country Water Sports, and Turtle Bay Marina all offer watersport rentals of many kinds. Whether you’re on a high-end wakesurf boat or a simple kayak, there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy your time on the water.

Golf

Sitting in between Kelowna and Vernon gives you even more options for a round of golf. Kelowna offers plenty of course options for all skill levels, and Vernon features the famous Predator Ridge Resort – one of the nicest courses in North America. For avid golfers, this part of the Okanagan is filled with fun for you.

Arts & Culture

Each September for two special days, the Lake Country ArtWalk is held. Over 200 Okanagan artists, 7000 visitors, and an incredible atmosphere where people come together to celebrate the beauty of art in all forms. During other times of the year, you can check out the various exhibits at the Lake Country Art Gallery or live performances at Creekside Theatre.

Shopping & Markets

Local markets with fresh produce, one-of-a-kind shops that carry handmade goods, and shopping centers with all the necessities. Lake Country has no shortage of great shopping. The most well-known local shopping is the Lake Country Farmers Market. Each  Friday afternoon from June to September, local vendors are out and about to sell produce, farm products, and artisanal goods.

Health & Wellness

For a smaller town compared to its neighbouring cities, Lake Country has an abundance of wellness centers and day spas for you to enjoy. After those long days spent exploring the beautiful outdoors, sometimes all you crave is some TLC. Whether it’s a relaxing couples massage or a manicure & pedicure, you’ve got plenty of options to pamper yourself here.

Events

There are various events in every season here. Live! In Lake Country gives free access to live music in Swalwell Park every Friday in July and August. The Lake Country ArtWalk brings artists together to celebrate the beauty of art in every form, and a variety of other events that celebrate community, music, and the beauty of this region.

Winter Activities

The Okanagan’s winters are very mild in comparison to many other parts of Canada. Hit the slopes at either Big White Ski Resort or Silverstar Mountain Resort, reach winter valley views on Spion Kop, or take a stroll on the Okanagan Rail Trail. For us, winter in Lake Country is one of the best times of year as the town is quiet, the lake is calm, but the outdoor activities are still on in full force.

Entertainment

Creekside Theatre is the place to be for live concerts and plays in Lake Country. If movies are your thing, there are theatres just a short drive away in both Kelowna and Vernon. Into casino games? The same thing, both neighbouring cities have popular casinos with every game you desire.
